When wealth and power transfers into darkness

“We have to stop at a hospital.” I finally got the nerve to say to Leonard, who by all rights was no one to fear except when he was fearful himself. Leaving the hotel, he had the looks of a completely crazed person which was a bit of a contrast to what I had considered to be a very intelligent yet confident man.

We had been driving for forty five minutes, thirty of which had been winding on very dangerous curves. Leonard had seemed oblivious to that and had had several close calls with the side railings. But the bleeding in Sue’s leg had progressed and she was now moaning in pain, unable to coherently answer any of my questions about her pain level.

Leonard ignored me, his foot still at an even ninety miles an hour, increasing the speed the moment we left the curves of the mountain.

I looked at Sue, who looked at me and shook her head. I then repeated my request with more urgency. “Leonard, please. We have to get Sue looked at. Immediately.”

Leonard finally made eye contact with me through the rearview. “We can’t go to a hospital. They’ll have to report gunshot wounds.”

I quickly argued, “We can say it was a hit and run accident. There’s no bullet, but the gash is really deep and…
